The origins of the project

Within the framework of a collaboration with the Ancient Egyptian Heritage and Archaeological Fund, a foundation directed by the American Egyptologist Peter Lacovara, I undertook in 2016 with the help of Paul François (Research Engineer at the Laboratoire d'Archéologie Médiévale et Moderne en Méditerranée) to partially reconstruct the palatial complex of Amenhotep III at Malqatta (west bank of Luxor in Egypt).

During this first phase of the project, we focused our attention on the hypostyle hall and the throne room to which it leads. This work led to very realistic views and a short virtual tour.

The decorative elements revealed by the missions carried out during the 20th century, especially those conducted by the Japanese University of Waseda in the 1970s and by the Metropolitan Museum of Art during the last decade, have made it possible to make original views with a high level of probability. These render the rich polychromy and complexity of the ornamentation  in its original context.

This reconstruction work led to the reconstruction of the royal canopy housing the pharaoh's throne. This is the result of research conducted on contemporary painted representations of the reign, then crossed with the few wooden fragments discovered on the site and the brick platform preserved for the most part. All this documentation made it possible for the first time to offer a faithful view of a pharaonic throne with its finely carved, richly painted and decorated canopy, typical of one of the most splendid periods in Egyptian history.

Continuation of the project

Due to lack of funding, the project was stopped. I decided in 2021 to relaunch it under the name Pharaonic Palace 3D Project, being deeply convinced of its scientific and artistic value.

Based on the work already done, I intend to offer more detail and realism with new views and virtual tours. First of all, I will finalize the canopy and its throne by applying the rich polychromy and finally set it in its close environment (throne room with columns, decorations and contemporary lamps).

The second objective in the short or medium term will be to add the large columned hall to it.

In the more or less long term, the entire palace and its surroundings will be reconstructed.
